{"id":848,"date":"2017-07-20T14:42:57","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T14:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/?page_id=848"},"modified":"2023-03-08T16:02:19","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T16:02:19","slug":"tips","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/index.php\/the-kidlink-project\/landmark\/tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/index.php\/project-center\/landmark\/\">Landmark HOME<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2180\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/landmark-worksheets.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/landmark-worksheets.jpg 547w, https:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/landmark-worksheets-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kidlink.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/landmark-worksheets-346x300.jpg 346w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/>Students use a folder and tracking sheet<br \/>\nParents can participate at home to help the students!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">These are suggestions for classes new to the Landmark Project.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> There are many ways to manage this activity, and I want to share how my grade 4 class participated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Class Teams:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Each participating class usually has one team known to the project, for example, my class would be called<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><u>Team Smith<\/u><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(<em>Some classes have more than one team with different names and each of those teams would have its own landmark and clue set.<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0In my classroom, I created several groups of kids with a good lead person in each group as the <em>Captain<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 I have groups 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, and among these groups, I divide up all of the landmarks among them to make the searching more manageable.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>For example<\/strong>, if there are 25 landmarks, I would do as follows. Each group is responsible for working on 5 landmarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Group 1: Landmarks 1-5<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Group 2: Landmarks 6-10<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Group 3: Landmarks 11-15<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Group 4: Landmarks 16-20<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> Group 5: Landmarks 21-25<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u2026. and so forth depending on the actual number of Landmarks.<\/span><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 2px; border: none; color: #333; background-color: #333;\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Organizing Student Groups:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> I have each of the groups<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>keep a folder<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>of the school landmarks they are searching for as well as the questions they send out each week and \u00a0the answers they receive. \u00a0See EXAMPLE WORKSHEET below. \u00a0Group 1, for example will have work sheets listing only their\u00a0 schools 1-5.\u00a0As the project proceeds, the groups track their answers and write down what they are finding in research to help locate the unknown landmark. \u00a0 \u00a0The key is keeping a good folder of information &#8211; I usually have the group Captain keep the folder. We do Landmark officially about 3 times each week in class (at least 1 hour), and then in any other spare moments when kids finish their work. Some classes do this during computer lab time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">All clues from Landmark players 1-5 would be kept in the Group 1 folder.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">All clues from Landmark players 6-10 would be kept in the Group 2 folder.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">All clues from Landmark players 11-15 would be kept in the Group 3 folder.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">&#8230;and so forth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Over the 3-week period, some groups might begin helping other groups as needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>At the end of week 3<\/strong>, the folder should contain all of the <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Final Guesses<\/strong> <\/span>to be sent into the project. Remember, we do not send guesses during the game, we only send email questions that can be answered with a YES or a NO. And we<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>always identify<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span>ourselves (from Team Smith) when we communicate.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 2px; border: none; color: #333; background-color: #333;\" \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Example Tracking Sheet<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">This is an example sheet that the following group of four students used to track the questions they sent out and the answers that return. The Captain keeps the information sheet in a folder. The folder also contains the Clues from each team. Students work together on the clues sent in by these schools. After serious thought, they agree on a question to write. The question is emailed, and when the answer returns, students mark if it was answered YES or NO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">***The following sheet only shows three of the schools assigned to this group.<strong>\u00a0I usually divide up all of the Clues such that each of my groups had 3 to 5 schools to contact and track.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>All emails were done through my account, but teachers do this as best works for their class.\u00a0As email responses came in, I would distribute the info to the appropriate team to put in their folders.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Group 1: Captain Kayla, Tom, Jessica and Andy\u00a0 (Schools 1-5)<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> (1) \u00a0Anabskaya School &#8211;
